Ok my friends and followers, we are gonna LOVE BOMB our fair city, known to most as Pittsfield, MA. and, to a few, as Shire City (a much more pleasing, palatable and positive cognomen). There is need in this city. So many levels of need it can overwhelm givers to a standstill.
There is poverty, neglect and abuse, drugs, tons of teenage parents, food deserts, under-education, gang activity, and screaming profanity on the streets. There is very little eye-contact of passers-by and very little visible excess on any positive level.
General Electric left a wake of PCB contamination on their exodus, in the playgrounds, house yards, and the Housatonic River. A real sadness was part of what GE left behind. People were abandoned in this poisoned place without much hope for a job worth working. I grew up not far from here. I remember the news stories about the barrels found leaking poison and the ‘clean fill’ sold (or maybe it was given) to the public schools for their new playgrounds. Later it came to light that that fill was actually saturated with PCB poison. While, for 30+ years GE continues to shirk real ownership of their damage and seemingly dismisses any real willingness to address the issue responsibly, good things percolate. You get my rant? This needy place could do with more love and less desperation. More care and less indifference. There are shining stars here – kids with bright futures, parents who care and work hard to provide for their communities, there are artists creating and coffee shops brewing, farmers farming, and yes, there are lovers loving. I’d like to spend February focused on spreading love, shining care, radiating compassion, worth, honor and trust out into our Shire City, into every single inhabitant.
So, here it is: Scattered through the city are blankets made from 421 little tiny squares (so small they appear like pixels from distant view). They are hung up in public and private establishments for all to see and appreciate. Find them, take pictures and post them on your favorite social network with #LoveBombShireCity. Each hashtagged image will be an entry into a drawing for a $100 gift certificate for my shop. Could be used for anything I sell.
Imagine that each one of those 421 little 3 inch squares came from a sweater worn by a person (some were undoubtedly hand knitted with love for the wearer) and each of those people was someone's kid, each has been loved and most have shared love – maybe, even, while wearing the sweater I’ve used. 421 little bits of love sewn into one of my Pixelated Heart Blankets. When there is a lot, of any, one, thing, it becomes easy to share it. Let’s do this my peeps! Lets see if we can create a ripple of love that spreads all over this city and beyond. Seriously, without cliche, love can heal - there are no bounds to what we can do while focused on love. Happy Valentine's month.
Feel free to leave a comment if you find one and let others know where to look. Make it fun and give a clue.
