Weekly Theme - Food Preservation

This week’s theme around here is Food Preservation.  Here is rural western Massachusetts, the season is changing and our summer bounty is prolific.  There is something nurturing and deeply satisfying about canning, drying and even freezing fruits and vegetables from our garden and nearby organic farms for winter.

This week I have apple sauce and pear sauce in my plan for stocking our pantry.  So far we have frozen peaches and blueberries for smoothies, a double batch of peach salsa - not too spicy, two different no-sugar peach preserves, peach ginger jam which is my sweet hubby’s favorite and vanilla maple peach jam which Lucy would eat by the spoonful if left to her own devises.

We’ll do a big batch of tomato sauce next week if all goes as planned. Tomato sauce is an annual affair - used for pizza, pasta and soups all winter and into spring.

As my kitchen fills with wafting scents of the season, I notice all the places in this process where recycled textiles come in handy.   Add to that nostalgia of making simple tools with beauty and meaning and the act of preserving food takes on a level of satisfaction and connection that feeds my soul – and then my family months from now.  

Have you ever noticed how long we use potholders?  For years I made potholders for Christmas gifts.  I still have one from the year 2005.  I encourage you to make a potholder and emblazon it with handmade charm. Stitch it with love and let the process feed you before that potholder even sees an oven or hot stovetop handle.


In our house we use dishcloths for all types of kitchen clean up, keeping single use disposable paper towels out of that mix.  (We are also cloth napkin users for our dining table, kitchen, and even lunchboxes.)  I use cloth bags for gathering wild apples in our forest, and aprons from my grandmother add a level of ancestry connection.  Funny how much my kids love to don one of her old-school full coverage aprons, and this year they fit nicely as Violet and Lucy are full size people at 13 and 14 years old respectively.
